Existing Lifts
While the European Lifts Directive concerns the placing on the market and putting into service of lifts and therefore applies only to new lifts, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have also shown their interest in improving the safety of existing lifts by adopting, at the same time as the Directive, the Recommendation 95/216/EC of 8 June 1995.
The recommendation is addressed to the Member States, recognizing that the safety of existing lifts is their sole responsibility.
In the light of ensuring public health and safety, EU Member States have adopted laws requiring periodic inspections of lifts by recognized independent inspection bodies at specified intervals, so that it can be ensured that lifts continue to operate safely throughout their useful life.
According to the Greek Legislation (Ministerial Decree. F.A/9.2/Oik. 28425/1245 – Government Gazette 2604/B/22-12-2008), the periodic inspection of lifts is mandatory and is carried out exclusively by Accredited / Approved Organizations under the responsibility of the owners / managers of the buildings.
TÜV AUSTRIA, an organization dedicated to technology and safety, supports building owners and managers to ensure a high level of safety of their lift installation by offering the full range of periodic lift inspection services required by legislation.
