ISO 18788

Short description:

ISO 18788:2015 represents an international standard that provides a framework for establishing, implementing, operating, monitoring, assessing, maintaining, and improving security operations management. It sets forth the principles and requirements for a Security Operation Management System (SOMS). Through the risk management framework, the demonstration of professional security operations is achieved to satisfy the requirements of clients and other interested parties, compliance with the regulatory framework, respect for human rights, and alignment with the Organization’s voluntary commitments.

Detailed Description:

Private security businesses play a significant role in safeguarding both state and non-state clients involved in relief, restoration, and reconstruction efforts, commercial business activities, developmental activities, diplomacy, and military operations. The organization, in close collaboration with legal clients and governmental entities, must adopt and implement the standards required to ensure that human rights and fundamental freedoms are upheld in order to protect lives and properties and to prevent unwarranted, illegal, and excessive actions. Therefore, organizations engaged in security operations manage the use of tactics, techniques, procedures, and equipment, including firearms, in a manner that achieves the goals of operations and risk management.

Key points of the standard include:

  • Risk analysis and opportunities assessment, including issues related to secure operations.
  • Anticipation of the need for training and education of personnel in security matters.
  • Protection of information and information technology systems.
  • Compliance of organizations with the legal framework and regulations governing their operations.
  • Quality management of security services.
  • Respect for human rights.
  • Encouragement of cooperation and communication among stakeholders.
  • Continuous improvement of security operations through the assessment and improvement process.
