Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Brief Description

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are an important tool for assessing and providing information about the environmental footprint of a product during its life cycle. EPDs provide detailed information on the impacts of products on issues such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, water and waste.

Detailed description

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are a globally accepted tool for evaluating and reporting a product’s environmental performance. The fundamentals of EPDs include:

  1. Integrated approach: The study and certification of EPDs is based on a comprehensive analysis of the product life cycle, covering the production, use and final disposal phases.
  2. Scientific basis: The study process is based on scientific methods and standards, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the results.
  3. Comparability: EPDs are designed with a single frame of reference, allowing comparison between similar products.
  4. Transparency: EPDs provide detailed information about the product’s environmental performance, such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, resource use and environmental outcomes.

What is the development and verification procedure?

The process of developing and verifying EPDs includes the following steps:

  1. Application submission: The producer of the product submits an application for the study and verification of the EPD.
  2. Study: Carrying out a detailed life cycle analysis (LCA) of the product in compliance with the product category rules (PCR), collecting and evaluating the necessary data and information.
  3. Evaluation: The collected information is evaluated and analyzed to assess the environmental performance of the product at all stages of its life cycle.
  4. Issuance of EPD: Based on the evaluation, the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is issued, which includes all the information about the environmental performance of the product.
  5. Verification: The EPD is verified by an independent verifier, who verifies the accuracy and reliability of the data and analysis contained in the EPD.
  6. Publication: The validated EPD is published on the website of the International EPD System and is accessible to all interested parties.

Who is it for?

EPDs are aimed at all producers of products, regardless of their size and sector of activity.

What are the benefits of developing and verifying an EPD?

  • Environmental transparency: EPDs provide clear and transparent information about a product’s environmental performance, enhancing transparency and accountability.
  • Informed Decision Making: Businesses and consumers can make more sustainable choices by comparing the environmental impact of different products using EPDs.
  • Regulatory Compliance: EPDs help businesses meet regulatory requirements related to environmental disclosure and reporting.
  • Green Building Certifications: EPDs contribute to obtaining credits or points in green building rating systems such as LEED, BREEAM and Green Star.
  • Market Differentiation: Having an EPD demonstrates an organization’s commitment to environmental responsibility, enhancing its reputation and competitiveness.
