Greenhouse Gas Calculation and Verification Management System Certification Process (ISO 14064)

Brief description

Climate change and environmental degradation are one of the greatest challenges of our time. The European Union has adopted a series of proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) with the ultimate goal of zero net emissions by 2050 (Green Deal). In Greece, the National Climate Law defines the groups (Municipalities and organizations) that will be obliged to calculate and submit greenhouse gas emissions according to the standard “ISO 14064 – 1: 2018”

Due to the increasingly strict Environmental legislation and the demand of consumers for greater transparency in Environmental claims, more and more organizations are voluntarily monitoring and reporting GHG emissions.

Detailed description

The ISO 14064 series is GHG program neutral. If a GHG program is applicable, requirements of that GHG program are additional to the requirements of the ISO 14064 series.

ISO 14064-1 specifies principles and requirements at the organization level for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization’s GHG inventory.

ISO 14064-2 specifies principles and requirements and provides guidance at the project level for the quantification, monitoring and reporting of activities intended to cause greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or removal enhancements. It includes requirements for planning a GHG project, identifying and selecting GHG sources, sinks and reservoirs (SSRs) relevant to the project and baseline scenario, monitoring, quantifying, documenting and reporting GHG project performance and managing data quality.

ISO 14064-3 specifies principles and requirements and provides guidance for verifying and validating greenhouse gas (GHG) statements.

What is the certification procedure?

Certification Regulation

Who is it for?

It applies to all organizations that aim to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions regardless of size and activity.

What are the benefits of certification?

The benefits from the verification of greenhouse gas emissions in are summarized below:

The Environmental profile of the Organization is improved

  • The product / service is differentiated and acquires a comparative advantage in the market.
  • Consumer demand for greater transparency is met.
  • Legal compliance is achieved in the Organizations that is a legal requirement (e.g. Climate Law).
