ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
Brief description
ISO 45001:2018 is the replacement to OHSAS 18001 and is the first international ISO standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS).
The standard specifies the requirements for the implementation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance.
Detailed description
ISO 45001:2018 helps an organization to achieve the intended outcomes of its OH&S management system. Consistent with the organization’s OH&S policy, the intended outcomes of an OH&S management system include:
- continual improvement of OH&S performance
- fulfilment of legal requirements and other requirements
- achievement of OH&S objectives
Key elements of the health & Safety management system are:
- Emphasis on the context of the organization (internal & external).
- Engagement of top management.
- Active participation of personnel.
- OH&S policies, which are compatible with the overall strategic objectives and direction of the organization.
- Compliance with legal and other requirements.
- Effective processes for identifying hazards, controlling OH&S risks and taking advantage of OH&S opportunities.
- Continual performance evaluation and monitoring of the OH&S management system to improve OH&S performance.
- Customer Focus and management of relationships with interested parties.
- ISO 45001 shares the high-level structure (HLS), as defined by Annex SL (e.g. clauses, headings and core requirements) and therefore it increases alignment and is easier to integrate with multiple management systems.
