The revised standard clarifies the concept of environmental conditions within the context of the organization. These are defined as the state or characteristics of the environment at a specific point in time, with reference to biodiversity, water scarcity, limited availability of raw materials, and rising temperatures. This helps organizations better understand and respond to dynamic environmental factors

2. Improved integration through Annex SL

The updated Annex SL structure enhances compatibility with other management systems, facilitating integration with quality, environmental, and other ISO standards.

3. Enhanced and expanded Annex A

Annex A now provides clearer guidance and adopts a more systemic approach, offering deeper understanding of the requirements and their implementation.

4. Updated terms and definitions

Concepts such as risks and opportunities are further clarified and linked to new requirements, including Paragraph 6.1.4 and the environmental policy.

Introduction of Paragraph 6.1.3 – Change Planning, emphasizing structured and proactive management of changes within the system.

6. Strengthened control of external providers

Expanded requirements covering externally provided products, services, and processes, reinforcing environmental responsibility across the supply chain.

7. Enhanced life cycle approach

The objective is to prevent pollution and reduce environmental impacts not only within the company’s facilities but across the entire value chain.

8. Improvements related to internal audits

Clearer requirements for defining the audit program and audit objectives, along with updated documentation requirements.

9. Restructuring of Management Review

Management review requirements are now divided into:

    • General requirements
    • Review inputs
    • Outputs

      ensuring completeness in the evaluation of the system.

10. Emphasis on leadership and organizational culture

Annex A includes additional guidance on leadership, organizational culture, environmental responsibility, and employee involvement, highlighting the role of people in achieving environmental objectives.

11. Alignment with business strategy

The revised standard reinforces the need to align the management system with the organization’s strategy and integrate environmental requirements into core business processes.
