Brief Description

The VLOG (Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik e.V.) “Ohne Gentechnik” Production and Certification Standard applies to the certification of products that do not contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and are also not produced using GMOs.

Detailed Description

The Standard can be applied to foods of animal origin, such as meat, milk, eggs, fish, and their derived products, as well as to other categories of food, such as cereals, fruits, and vegetables. In these cases, certified products are labelled with the “Ohne Gentechnik” label.

The main criteria that must be met for the label to be awarded are that the product:

• does not contain GMOs or parts thereof
• has not been produced from or by GMOs
• does not contain vitamins, flavours, enzymes, or other food additives or processing aids that are produced with the help of GMOs

In the case of foods of animal origin, it is additionally required that GMO material is not included in the feed used to raise the animals, or that strict time limits are applied if the animals were at any point fed with GMO-containing feed. For this reason, in addition to food processing facilities, the Standard also applies to the certification of livestock farms and feed production units for the manufacture of animal feed, which may carry the “VLOG geprüft” label. Furthermore, it also covers logistics services (e.g. transportation, storage, handling) in order to ensure full traceability throughout the entire supply chain.

A prerequisite for the use of the label is that the producer has an agreement in place with the VLOG organization and has been certified by a certification body recognized by VLOG, such as TÜV AUSTRIA HELLAS.
