TÜV AUSTRIA in Greece Recognized by International Booking Platforms

The new European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) expands the existing legal requirements for corporate sustainability reports, introducing new obligations for the tourism sector as well.

According to a survey by Expedia, 90% of consumers seek sustainable options when traveling, although 74% of consumers believe it costs more to travel sustainably. Nevertheless, half would be willing to pay more for sustainable activities, transportation, and accommodation.

At the same time, according to a survey by Booking, 71% of travelers would like to try to travel more sustainably, while 53% of travelers are determined to choose sustainable tourist destinations and focus on the positive impact their travels have on local communities and ecosystems.

As confirmed by the surveys, commitment to sustainability is now a one-way street for Greek tourism businesses, making it imperative to integrate it into the core of their strategy and business model. Sustainability is not just an option but an imperative responsibility for all stakeholders in the tourism value chain.

Certifications from independent third parties are a strong recognition of a hotel’s commitment to sustainability. At the same time, they enhance its credibility and increase travelers’ trust in the sustainable options it offers.

In the context of combating greenwashing, a hotel’s commitment to environmental and socio-economic sustainability will no longer be evaluated by a simple record of the actions it implements.

The recent change in Booking’s sustainability evaluation program marks a significant step towards greater transparency and substantial accountability of businesses on sustainability issues.

New Sustainability Program

From March 2024, Booking abolished the levels of Travel Sustainable (the well-known sustainability badges) and implement a new process to emphasize the importance of certifications from independent third parties.

The largest global platforms in the tourism industry, which are part of Travalyst’s partner network, such as Booking.com, Expedia Group, Google, Skyscanner, and Trip.com Group, now recognize and display certifications only from certified bodies.
